Rahu and Ketu behave unlike any other graha, and most of the confusion about them comes from reading them as though they were planets.
They are points, not bodies
Rahu and Ketu are where the Moon’s orbit crosses the Sun’s apparent path — the ascending and descending nodes. There is nothing there to see, which is why they are called the shadow grahas, chhaya graha.
Because they are geometric rather than physical, they own no sign and are never exalted or debilitated in the way a planet is. They take their character largely from the sign they occupy and the planet ruling it.
Always opposite, always together
The two are permanently 180 degrees apart, so a nodal transit is never about one house. Rahu enters one and Ketu simultaneously enters the seventh from it, and both operate for the full eighteen months.
This is why the readings above name two houses for each rashi. What Rahu inflates on one side, Ketu tends to hollow on the other.
Rahu magnifies; Ketu empties
The classical description is that Rahu creates appetite without satisfaction — it enlarges the affairs of its house and makes them feel urgent, unfamiliar and never quite sufficient. Foreign things, sudden rises and unconventional routes belong to it.
Ketu does the reverse. It withdraws interest from its house, and what it touches is often not lost so much as no longer wanted. Detachment, and occasionally unexpected skill in the same area.
Retrograde by nature, not by phase
The nodes move backwards through the zodiac permanently, which is why they enter Kumbha from Meena rather than from Makara. There is no retrograde period to watch and no station to note.
It also means their transit runs the twelve signs in reverse order, so the sequence of houses you experience over eighteen years runs the opposite way to every other graha.

Rahu in the 3rd, 6th and 11th is classically favoured — the upachaya houses, where a malefic grows into strength rather than obstruction. Rahu in the 8th is the position most often flagged. But the nodes are read more by what they touch in the birth chart than by house alone: a nodal transit crossing your natal Rahu or Ketu, or your lagna, is felt far more sharply than the house position suggests, and that is chart-specific.
Why the same transit is not the same for two people
A rashi is one twelfth of everyone. Roughly a hundred million people share your Moon sign, and the reading above applies to all of them equally. It is useful as a general indication and no more than that — anyone who tells you otherwise is overselling.
Three things change what the nodes actually do. Where your natal Rahu and Ketu sit — a transit crossing them is felt far more than one that does not. Which sign the axis occupies and which planet rules it, since the nodes borrow their character. And which dasha you are running: a nodal transit during a Rahu or Ketu mahadasha is a different matter entirely.

No, and they are frequently confused. Kaal Sarp is a condition of your birth chart — all seven planets falling between your natal Rahu and Ketu — and it does not change during your life. Because they are the points where the Moon’s orbital plane crosses the ecliptic, and that plane itself rotates slowly westward. The nodes therefore regress through the zodiac permanently — about nineteen degrees a year. It is not a retrograde phase; there is no period when they turn direct, and no station to watch for.
Neither, and the framing misleads. Rahu magnifies its house — appetite, ambition, foreign influence — which is welcome in the 3rd, 6th or 11th and difficult in the 8th. Ketu withdraws interest from its house, which is unwelcome where you want engagement and a genuine relief where you do not. Both are read together, since they always work as a pair.

Tradition prescribes propitiation of the node concerned — the Rahu or Ketu mantra, the associated observance, and where it falls heavily, the rite. Where Kaal Sarp is also present in the birth chart, the Kaala Sarpa Shanti Homa is the specific remedy. What tradition does not counsel is alarm: the nodes reach every house of every chart on an eighteen-year cycle, and always have.
