Each planet rules for a fixed span. Where your sequence begins depends on the nakshatra the Moon occupied at your birth, which is why two people born days apart can start in different periods.
Read as detachment, loss of grip on what was held, and turning inward. Short, and often felt as a clearing.
Relationship, comfort, artistry and the settled life. The longest of the benefic periods, and generally favourable for marriage.
Authority, recognition, the father. Short and concentrated — position and visibility, and the strain of carrying either.
Mind, mother, home and feeling. Read as a period of fluctuation rather than fixity.
Energy, conflict, property and siblings. Decisive, and demanding of somewhere to direct itself.
Ambition, foreign lands, sudden rise and unfamiliar ground. The longest period after Saturn, and rarely uneventful.
Growth, learning, children and counsel. Traditionally the most auspicious of the mahadashas.
Labour, endurance and consequence. Demanding rather than unkind — what is built during it tends to last.
Intellect, commerce, communication and travel. Busy, and favourable for anything requiring dexterity of mind.
The ruling planet for a span of six to twenty years. It sets the overall character of that stretch of life, and the houses that planet owns and occupies become the areas most active during it.
A benefic mahadasha is not automatically an easy one, nor a malefic period automatically hard. What matters is the condition of that planet in your particular chart — its dignity, its house, and what aspects it.
Each mahadasha subdivides into nine antardashas, in the same planetary order, proportioned to the length of the major period. This is usually where the texture of a year comes from.
The classical reading weighs the relationship between the two lords. A friendly antardasha lord within a strong mahadasha reads very differently from an inimical one, even where the mahadasha itself is favourable.
The subdivision continues — pratyantardasha within antardasha, and further still. Each layer refines the timing, and astrologers use the lower levels when dating a specific event rather than describing a period.
For most purposes the mahadasha and antardasha are what matter. The deeper levels are precision tools, and they are only as reliable as the birth time behind them.
You do not begin life at the start of a mahadasha. The Moon's exact position within its nakshatra determines how much of the first period had already elapsed — the balance — and everything after follows from it.
This is why the birth time matters here more than in most calculations. An hour's error shifts the balance and moves every subsequent period date with it.
A birth chart is fixed. The dasha is what makes it move — which is why classical practice consults it before interpreting placements in isolation.

A placement that is not running is largely dormant. This is the point most often missed by people reading their own charts: a striking combination that belongs to a mahadasha thirty years away is not shaping this year. Knowing which period you are in is what turns a static chart into something with timing.
It is a timing system, not a prediction. Knowing you are in a Shani mahadasha tells you which planet governs the period; it does not tell you what will happen. What happens depends on where Saturn sits in your chart, what it rules, what aspects it, and what the antardasha lord contributes — which is a reading rather than a lookup.
Nor is any period simply good or bad. Popular writing attaches fixed reputations to certain dashas — Rahu feared, Jupiter welcomed — and the classical texts are considerably more careful than that. A well-placed Rahu period can be the making of someone; a badly placed Jupiter period can be difficult. The planet's condition in your chart decides it.
And a difficult period is not a sentence. Where the running lord is weak or afflicted, tradition prescribes propitiation for that specific planet — a mantra, a stone, and the rite associated with it. Vimshottari means "one hundred and twenty" — the total of the nine periods it distributes. It is one of several dasha systems in the classical literature, and by a wide margin the most used, because it is tied to the nakshatras and therefore to the Moon, which Vedic astrology treats as the closest indicator of lived experience.
Each of the twenty-seven nakshatras is ruled by one of the nine grahas, in a repeating sequence. The nakshatra your Moon occupied at birth determines which planet's period you were born into, and how much of it had already passed. From that single fact the entire sequence of your life's periods follows, in fixed order, for as far ahead as you care to look.
What the system offers is timing rather than prophecy. It says which part of your chart is active and for how long — and leaves what that means to the chart itself, and to whoever reads it.
Not on that basis alone. Saturn's period is demanding — it is read as labour, patience and consequence — but the classical texts do not treat it as misfortune. Where Saturn is well placed in your chart it can be among the most productive stretches of a life; what is built during it tends to hold. What matters is Saturn's condition in your chart, not the planet's general reputation. That is a reading rather than a lookup.
No, and they are frequently confused. A dasha is a period allotted by your birth nakshatra and runs on a fixed schedule for life. Sade Sati is a transit — the seven and a half years while Saturn passes over the signs around your birth Moon — and it happens to everyone roughly every thirty years, regardless of dasha. The arithmetic is exact; the input is what varies. Period dates follow from the Moon's precise longitude at birth, so an accurate birth time gives accurate turning points. An hour's error can move a mahadasha boundary by several months, and the effect compounds down the sequence. Where the time is uncertain, treat the dates as approximate — the order of periods remains correct regardless.
The mahadasha sets the frame; the antardasha usually supplies the events. Classical practice reads them together and weighs the relationship between the two lords — friendly, neutral or inimical — since a benefic sub-period inside a difficult major period behaves quite differently from the same sub-period elsewhere. Neither is read alone.
The sequence is fixed from birth and does not change. What tradition holds is that the planet governing a period can be propitiated where it is weak or afflicted — through its mantra, its stone, and the rite associated with it. That is the classical response to a difficult period: not avoidance, but strengthening what is running.
Usually the ayanamsa. We use Lahiri; a site using Raman or KP will place the Moon slightly differently, which shifts the balance at birth and moves every subsequent date. A different birth time or timezone resolution does the same. If the sequence of planets matches and only the dates differ slightly, both are calculating correctly from different assumptions.
