Formed when all seven planets fall between the Rahu–Ketu axis, with none outside it. Tradition reads it as concentrating the chart into one half of the zodiac, and associates it with effort meeting obstruction — particularly in the earlier part of life.
There are twelve named varieties depending on which house Rahu occupies, and they are not read alike. A partial form, where one planet sits just outside the axis, is treated far more lightly.
Arises when Mars occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house — counted from the lagna, and in many traditions also from the Moon and from Venus. It is read in relation to marriage, and to the temperament each partner brings to it.
Its strength varies enormously with the sign Mars occupies and its dignity there. A Manglik chart with Mars strong and well-placed is not read as a Manglik chart with Mars debilitated.
Indicated by affliction to the 9th house or its lord, and classically associated with unfulfilled obligations to the ancestors. It is read as a pattern that repeats through a family rather than something a person acquires.
Assessment varies more between traditions than the other three. Some schools weigh the Sun's condition heavily; others look chiefly at Rahu or Saturn's involvement with the 9th.
Nadi describes constitution — Adi, Madhya or Antya — determined by the birth nakshatra. The dosha arises in matching, when both charts share the same nadi, and it carries the heaviest weight of any koota at eight of thirty-six.
This is why a single chart returns your nadi rather than a verdict: the affliction only exists in relation to another chart.
The word means a fault or an imbalance — the same term Ayurveda uses for constitution. In a chart it names a placement the classical texts flagged as needing attention, in the way a physician flags a tendency rather than diagnosing a disease.
None of the four here predicts an event. They describe a pattern the texts thought worth naming, and every one of them is read alongside the rest of the chart.
The same texts that define these afflictions define the conditions under which they do not operate — bhanga, cancellation. This is not a modern softening; it is in the classical sources, and it is as much a part of the rule as the affliction itself.
A tool reporting the presence and omitting the cancellation is not reporting the tradition faithfully. It is reporting half of it, and the frightening half.
Whether a dosha is present is a yes or no. How strongly it operates is a matter of degree — the dignity of the planet forming it, the houses it aspects, whether benefics support the chart elsewhere.
Two people can carry the same named dosha and be in entirely different positions. A calculator can tell you the first thing. Only a reading tells you the second.
Where an affliction genuinely stands, tradition does not counsel resignation — it prescribes. A mantra, a stone, a bead, a rite, in roughly that order of weight, matched to the planet involved.
What it does not counsel is alarm. The remedies are ordinary observances, performed by ordinary families, for conditions that are common.
Some are computed from the Moon alone and stay reliable without an exact time. Others depend on the lagna, which moves every two hours.

We will tell you which is which. Where a birth time is missing, the result marks the affected doshas as unavailable rather than guessing at them. A dosha reported from an assumed birth time is worse than no report at all, because it will be believed.
These conditions are common. Mangal dosha, on the widest reading, appears in a substantial share of charts. Nadi dosha arises in roughly a third of random pairings before cancellations are applied. They are not rare misfortunes; they are ordinary features of ordinary charts, which is precisely why the tradition developed cancellation rules and remedies rather than treating them as catastrophes.
The internet makes them sound worse than the texts do. A great deal of what is written about Kaal Sarp in particular has no basis in the classical sources, which treat it far more moderately than the modern retellings. If you have been frightened by something you read, that is a reason to consult someone who works from the texts.
And a dosha is never a reason to end a relationship or abandon a plan. It is a reason to have the chart read properly, and where something genuinely stands, to perform what tradition prescribes for it. The rites tradition prescribes, by affliction.
Every classical text that names an affliction also names the conditions that annul it. Parashara sets out cancellations for Kaal Sarp; the Mangal rules carry mutual cancellation as a matter of course; Nadi dosha has several recognised exceptions that apply to a large share of the pairings it would otherwise flag. The doctrine was never "this placement is present, therefore this outcome follows".
What happens online is that the first half survives and the second is dropped. A calculator reports "Mangal dosha present" and stops, and a family reads that as a verdict. The result is engagements broken over conditions the tradition itself would have set aside, and people carrying anxiety about charts that a competent astrologer would describe as unremarkable.
This tool reports both halves. Where an affliction is present it says so plainly; where a cancellation applies it says that too, and names the rule. What it will not do is tell you how strongly something operates, because that requires weighing the whole chart — and that remains the work of a person, not a program.
Considerably less severe than most of what is written about it online. The classical treatment is moderate; much of the dramatic material circulating has no basis in the texts. What matters is which of the twelve varieties it is, whether the axis is complete or partial, and whether a cancellation applies — all of which the result tells you. Yes, and many do. The classical position is that where both parties carry Mangal dosha it cancels mutually — but that is one cancellation among several. Mars in its own sign or exaltation, Jupiter's aspect, and certain sign placements all neutralise it. Its strength also varies widely. Run a matching check with both charts, which assesses it properly, and where it stands after that, tradition prescribes rites rather than refusal.
Usually one of three reasons. Different ayanamsa can move a planet across a house boundary. Different traditions count Mangal from the lagna only, or from the lagna, Moon and Venus. And many tools do not apply cancellation rules at all — so they report an affliction that we report as cancelled. If two sources disagree materially, the useful step is to have the chart read rather than to trust whichever answer you prefer.
Not in the sense of altering a chart — the placements are what they are. What tradition holds is that the effect can be propitiated: the planet involved is strengthened or appeased through mantra, through a stone or bead, and through the rite prescribed for it. Whether one performs them is a matter of belief and practice, and we would not press anyone toward a ritual they do not want.
For Kaal Sarp and Nadi, no — both stay reliable without it. For Mangal it gives a partial reading, and for Pitra none at all, since both depend on the houses and the houses depend on the lagna. Where the time is missing the result marks those as unavailable rather than guessing, which matters: a dosha reported from an assumed time will be believed.
