Guru Bala — Jupiter’s strength for you
Where Jupiter occupies the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th or 11th from your Moon, tradition says Guru Bala is with you. Those are the years families choose for marriages, for beginning study, and for conception.
Where it falls elsewhere, Guru Bala is said to be absent. It is not a misfortune — it is the reason the same family will wait a year before fixing a wedding.
Jupiter expands whatever it touches
This is why the same planet can be auspicious in one house and unwelcome in another. In the 5th it expands children and learning; in the 6th it expands illness, debt and adversaries, which is nobody’s idea of a benefit.
The classical description is that Jupiter enlarges rather than improves. What is enlarged depends entirely on the house.
The three aspects matter as much as the position
Jupiter aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th houses from wherever it sits — a wider reach than any other graha. So a Jupiter transit touches four areas of life at once, not one.

Debilitation and exaltation
Jupiter is exalted in Karka and debilitated in Makara. A transit through its exaltation sign is read as considerably stronger, and through its debilitation as giving less freely, regardless of which house it occupies for you.

Seven of twelve read as unfavourable, and this surprises people. Jupiter has a reputation as the great benefic, so the expectation is that its transit is good news. In transit terms it is favourable in five positions out of twelve — fewer than Saturn, which reads well in six. The reputation comes from Jupiter’s role in the birth chart, which is a different question from where it happens to be transiting.
Why the same transit is not the same for two people
A rashi is one twelfth of everyone. Roughly a hundred million people share your Moon sign, and the reading above applies to all of them equally. It is useful as a general indication and no more than that — anyone who tells you otherwise is overselling.
