When should it be done? Find an auspicious window.

A muhurta is a chosen moment. Different undertakings need different conditions — a marriage is not timed like a vehicle purchase — so tell us what you are planning and we will find the dates that suit it, with the excluded months, combustion periods and unsuitable tithis already taken out.

✓ Always free✓ No sign-up requiredAstangata excludedExcluded months appliedBetter with birth details

A calendar narrows the field. It does not choose the date. Once the unsuitable periods are removed, which of the remaining dates actually suits depends on the charts of the people involved — and for a marriage, that is not optional. This finds the shortlist honestly and tells you where it stops. Where it stops →

What are you planning?

The undertaking and your city are required. Birth details sharpen the result considerably but are optional.

What is taken out before you see a single date

These exclusions apply by undertaking. Removing them is the easy half of choosing a muhurta — and the result shows exactly which rules were used.

      Shukra Astangata

Venus combustion · twice every three years

Venus governs marriage, and while it is too close to the Sun to be seen, tradition holds its blessing cannot be given. Marriages, engagements, griha pravesh and several other beginnings are not fixed during these weeks.

Applied to: marriage, engagement, griha pravesh, upanayanam, business start. See the dates →

      Guru Moudhyam

Jupiter combustion · about a month each year

The same reasoning applied to Jupiter, significator of children, counsel and dharma. Checked alongside Venus for any marriage muhurta, and it removes further weeks from an already narrow field.

Applied to: marriage, engagement, upanayanam, vidyarambham.

      Excluded months

      Southern practice

Margazhi is avoided entirely for auspicious undertakings, Aadi in most Tamil families, and Purattasi is kept for devotion rather than celebration. Panguni and Vaikasi are among the most favoured.

Applied by purpose: the result lists the exact solar months used. The solar months →

      Tithi, vara and nakshatra rules

      From the panchang

Rikta tithis — the 4th, 9th and 14th of either paksha — are avoided for beginnings. Vyatipata and Vaidhriti are removed, while Vishti and Rahu Kalam are shown as time-of-day cautions rather than falsely removing a whole date.

Applied to: everything, adjusted by undertaking. Today’s panchang →
How a muhurta is actually chosen

Four layers, and where a free tool stops

First: remove what is unsuitable for everyone

The excluded months, Venus and Jupiter combustion, Rikta tithis, adverse yogas and karanas. None of this depends on who you are, so it can be computed for any city and any date range — which is what this tool does.

For a marriage in a given year, this alone typically removes more than half the calendar. Most families are surprised by how little remains.

Second: match the nakshatra to the undertaking

Each undertaking has nakshatras that suit it. Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara and Hasta are among those favoured for marriage; Chitra, Anuradha and Revati for travel; Pushya for almost anything except marriage.

This is computable too, and it narrows the shortlist further — usually to a handful of dates in a given month.

Third: check the dates against the chart

Here it becomes personal. Is Guru Bala present? Is the tithi favourable from the janma nakshatra? Is the person in Sade Sati, or running a difficult dasha? Does the date fall on their Chandrashtama?

Give birth details above and we can check these. For a marriage, both charts are needed, and the answer for one may not suit the other.

Fourth: the lagna at the moment itself

The final layer is not a date but a time — choosing the rising sign for the ceremony, avoiding the eighth from it, placing benefics in kendras, and steering clear of Rahu Kalam. This is calculated to the minute.

No automatic tool does this responsibly, and we would not claim otherwise. It is what an astrologer does, and for a marriage it is not optional.

      What each undertaking needs

The conditions differ considerably. This is why a single “auspicious days” calendar is of limited use.

Notice the last column. For a vehicle purchase or a journey, a calendar is genuinely sufficient — the tradition itself treats these lightly. For a marriage, a griha pravesh or a business inauguration, the charts are part of the method, and no tool that does not ask for them is giving you a muhurta. It is giving you a list of days that are not obviously bad, which is a different thing.

What this tool will and will not do

It will remove the dates that are unsuitable for anyone, and rank what remains. The excluded months, both combustions, adverse tithis and yogas, and the nakshatras that suit your particular undertaking. Give birth details and it will also check Guru Bala, the tithi from your janma nakshatra, and Chandrashtama. For a vehicle, a journey or a first day at school, that is genuinely enough.

It will not choose the hour, and for a marriage that is the part that matters most. The lagna rising at the moment of the ceremony, the placement of benefics in kendras, avoiding the eighth house and Rahu Kalam — this is calculated to the minute, from both charts together, and no automatic tool does it responsibly. Anyone claiming otherwise is selling something.

So use it to arrive at a shortlist, then have the moment fixed. Our astrologers calculate marriage and griha pravesh muhurtas individually, and where you book a ritual with us the muhurta for it is calculated from your chart as a matter of course, at no extra charge. Book a consultation →

Why the moment is chosen at all

Muhurta shastra rests on a simple premise: an undertaking begun at a favourable moment carries something of that moment with it. The chart cast for the instant a marriage is solemnised, or a house first entered, or a business opened, is read as the chart of that undertaking — with its own lagna, its own planetary placements, and its own subsequent life.

This is why the tradition takes it so seriously, and why it is not merely a matter of avoiding bad days. Choosing a moment is closer to choosing a birth than to consulting a weather forecast. The excluded periods remove what would clearly harm; the positive selection — the right nakshatra, a supportive lagna, benefics well placed — is what gives the undertaking a good chart of its own.

What this means practically is that a muhurta for something that matters is calculated, not looked up. A calendar can tell you which days are not unsuitable. Only a chart cast for a specific minute can tell you the moment is right.

      Questions

      About muhurtas

To reach a shortlist, yes — and that is genuinely useful, because the exclusions alone remove more than half of most years. To fix the date and the hour, no. A marriage muhurta is chosen from both charts together and calculated to the minute for the lagna at the ceremony, and no automatic tool does that responsibly. Use this to find the plausible dates, then have the moment fixed properly.

Because the exclusions compound. Margazhi, Aadi and Purattasi remove roughly a quarter of the year in southern practice; Venus combustion removes six weeks twice every three years; Jupiter combustion about a month annually; Rikta tithis remove six days each lunar month. Once nakshatra suitability is applied on top, a typical year offers far fewer marriage dates than families expect — which is why planning early matters.

Not to use the tool, but they change what it can tell you. Without them we remove the dates unsuitable for everyone and rank the rest by nakshatra. With them we can also check Guru Bala, the tithi from your janma nakshatra, and whether a date falls on your Chandrashtama — which is what actually reduces a shortlist to a choice.

The venue’s. Every timing derives from local sunrise, so a muhurta calculated for Coimbatore does not hold in Toronto. If the ceremony is in one city and the family lives in another, use the place where it will actually be performed.

A real question and worth settling early rather than after a date is chosen. Northern and southern practice differ on excluded months, on how wide the buffer around combustion runs, and on some nakshatra preferences. This tool follows the Tamil Nadu and Kerala convention. Where the two families differ materially, that is a conversation for an astrologer rather than a calendar.

Yes — worship is not restricted by any of this. The exclusions apply to beginnings: a marriage, a house entered, a business opened. Homas, temple rites, ancestral offerings and festivals are performed throughout, including during Astangata and in Margazhi. Our priests perform rituals every day of the year.

Yes, and at no extra charge. When you book a homa, our astrologers calculate the muhurta from your own birth details rather than performing it on a date that suits everyone — that is part of what you are paying for. A shortlist is not a muhurta.

For a marriage, a griha pravesh or a business opening, the moment is calculated to the minute from the charts of everyone involved. Our astrologers do that individually — and where you book a ritual with us, the muhurta for it is included as a matter of course. The consultation fee is credited in full against any ritual you book.
