Aditya Hridayam

आदित्यहृदयं पुण्यं सर्वशत्रुविनाशनम् । जयावहं जपेन्नित्यम् अक्षय्यं परमं शिवम् ॥

In Devanagari, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and English — with the meaning of every word, and the one syllable most people pronounce wrongly.

Who Aditya Hridayam is

Aditya Hridayam is the heart-hymn of the Sun taught by the sage Agastya to Rama on the battlefield of Lanka. Within the Valmiki Ramayana it stands as a self-contained stotra of approximately thirty verses that identify the visible solar disc with the innermost consciousness of the cosmos. Aditya here is not merely the weekday lord but the single eye of the three worlds, the origin and withdrawal of time, and the deity who animates every other god from within. The hymn moves from exterior praise of the rising orb to interior recognition that the same light dwells as the seer inside the heart. Reciters therefore approach it as both a solar address and a revelation of the self-luminous awareness that the epic places at the centre of heroic action.

Agastya on the Battlefield

In the Yuddha Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayana, Rama stands exhausted after days of combat, facing Ravana who has returned to the field in fresh fury. At that moment the sage Agastya appears in the sky and draws Rama aside. He declares that the hour has come to hear the eternal secret called Aditya Hridayam, the heart of the Sun. Agastya then recites the hymn, identifying Aditya with Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Skanda, Prajapati, and the very life-breath of all creatures. He instructs Rama to look upon the Sun with steady attention and to recite the hymn three times. After receiving the teaching Rama regains clarity, faces the eastern sky, and returns to battle. The epic presents the stotra as the turning knowledge that restores the hero’s single-pointed vision at the decisive hour, anchoring solar worship inside the narrative of dharma’s defence.

The mantra, in six scripts

The seed mantra, and the form most devotees chant daily. No initiation is required — it is open to anyone, including a parent chanting for a child.

Aim is the mantra, in a sense. The rest is address and salutation; the seed syllable carries the goddess. Where a practitioner has been given a very short practice, it is often Aim alone.

The syllable people get wrong

In the opening word ādityahṛdayaṃ the syllable dya of āditya contains a palatal glide that must remain light. Speakers often insert a full vowel, turning dya into diya and stretching the name into ādi-ti-ya. The compression of dya into one beat is required by the anustubh meter of the Ramayana verse.

When Aditya Hridayam is chanted

Questions

The hymn is embedded in the Yuddha Kanda, immediately before Rama’s final confrontation with Ravana. Valmiki presents it as spoken by Agastya, who arrives unbidden when Rama’s strength and clarity have reached their lowest point. The placement inside the epic narrative distinguishes it from independent solar stotras that lack a dramatic frame.
Agastya’s own verses equate the outer solar disc with the inner seer. By naming the text hṛdaya, heart, the tradition indicates that the light praised in the sky is identical with the awareness that witnesses from within the chest. The title therefore signals a non-dual recognition rather than exterior planetary propitiation alone.
Ratha Saptami marks the Sun’s northward turn and the symbolic re-yoking of his chariot. In many southern temples the Aditya Hridayam is recited at dawn on that day before the processional image of Surya, linking the epic hymn to the annual solar observance that celebrates the same deity Agastya revealed to Rama.
