Panchang means five limbs — tithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga and karana. Together they describe the quality of a day, and they are the basis on which every muhurta in the Vedic tradition is chosen. All five are below for the selected date, along with the periods to avoid and the windows that are favourable.
Times differ by city, and by more than people expect. Sunrise drives almost everything in a panchang, so Rahu Kalam in Chennai is not Rahu Kalam in Delhi, let alone in Toronto. The panel opposite is calculated for the location shown — change it if that is wrong.

Sunday carries Shukla Chaturthi, with the Moon in Hasta. This combination is best used for skilled hands-on work, organising details and completing a craft. Sadhya yoga and Vishti karana refine the timing rather than acting as a personal horoscope.

This is date-specific Panchang guidance for the selected city. It narrows the day; a marriage, house entry or other major undertaking still needs a purpose-specific muhurta and, where required, the relevant charts.
Each limb is a different relationship between the Sun and Moon. Together they describe the day; separately, each governs different undertakings.

A panchang day does not begin at midnight. It runs from sunrise to sunrise, which is why a tithi can be labelled for a date it does not cover in full, and why a festival can fall on what looks like the wrong day. Two further periods derived the same way. Yamagandam is avoided for beginnings much as Rahu Kalam is. Gulikai is the exception — it is read as favourable, and things begun during it are said to recur or endure.
Which is why Gulikai is shown in a different colour above. It is commonly mistaken for a third inauspicious period.
Roughly forty-eight minutes around solar noon, and the most reliably auspicious window of most days. It is said to overcome many other defects in the panchang, which makes it the standard fallback when nothing better is available.
The one exception is Wednesday, when Abhijit is not taken in several traditions.

The eighth of daylight taken differs by day. These are the standard segments — the clock times depend entirely on your local sunrise and sunset.

This is why a printed panchang from another state can mislead. The segments are fixed but their clock times are not — daylight length varies by latitude and season, so an eighth of the day in Coimbatore in December is a different span from an eighth in Delhi in June. Any panchang not calculated for your own city is approximate at best.
A panchang describes the day, not your day. Every one of the five limbs is identical for everyone in your city. What differs between two people on the same date is their own charts and running periods — and classical practice weighs those first. A favourable panchang does not override a difficult dasha.
The inauspicious periods are narrower than they are often applied. Rahu Kalam prohibits beginning something — a journey, a purchase, an agreement. It does not require pausing work already underway, cancelling a meeting, or avoiding worship. Treating it as a general ban on activity is a modern over-extension.
And for anything of real consequence, a panchang is the starting point rather than the answer. A wedding, a griha pravesh or a business inauguration is timed from the charts of the people involved as well as the day. A panchang is an almanac of the day’s five qualities, and it exists to answer one practical question: is this a suitable moment for what I intend to do. Every muhurta in the Vedic tradition — for a marriage, a housewarming, the first letters a child writes, the lighting of a homa fire — is chosen from it.
The five limbs are not interchangeable. Tithi governs fasts and observances; nakshatra governs muhurta above all else; yoga gives a general reading of the day’s quality; karana refines the timing within it; and vara, the weekday, carries the character of its ruling graha. A day can be strong in one and weak in another, which is why a panchang is read as a whole rather than by any single line.
What it cannot do is speak to you specifically. The panchang is the same for everyone in your city, and the tradition never treated it as a substitute for reading the charts of the people involved. It narrows the field; it does not choose.
