The Ritual and Its Weight

Yamaraja holds the ledger of time. In the Vedic imagination he is not a figure of dread but the keeper of dharma and of the span allotted to each life. The Yamaraja Homa approaches him directly: an offering made into fire, asking that the years given be lived in strength, that illness lift, that the body be equal to the work still left in it. It is a Health rite in the plainest sense — the ancestors turned to it when a fever would not break, when age pressed hard, when a household kept a long vigil beside someone dear.

Fire is chosen because fire carries. Ghee, sesame, darbha and herbs offered into a kindled altar with Yama's mantras become the language of the prayer. The tradition that gave us the story of Markandeya — the boy who sang before the fire and was spared — places the yamaraja homam in that same lineage of appeal, and devotees who read of markandeya homa benefits often arrive here next. Your homa is performed by priests at our Yagna Ashram, in your name and gotra, and telecast to you live wherever you are.

ॐ सूर्यपुत्राय विद्महे महाकालाय धीमहि । तन्नो यमः प्रचोदयात् ॥ We contemplate the son of the Sun, we meditate upon the great lord of time — may Yama guide and quicken our understanding.

Why Devotees Book This

The homa benefits sought here are the ones a family names quietly at the start of a difficult year. Among the reasons devotees ask for the yamaraja homam:

Support during recovery

Offered while a family member is convalescing, so the period of healing is held in prayer and dharma.

Relief from chronic ailments

Traditionally invoked when a complaint has become long-standing and the household wants spiritual support alongside its treatment.

Vitality and stamina

Sought for those who feel their strength thinning — after illness, after strain, after years of carrying more than their share.

Longevity in the family

The classical ayush prayer: that elders and children alike be granted a full and steady span of years.

Freedom from persistent fear

Yamaraja is the lord of dharma. Devotees turn to him when anxiety about health or mortality has settled into the mind.

Dharmic protection of the household

Offered so that the home's conduct, its debts to ancestors and its duties stay in good order.

What you receive

The sealing of the yantra

When your homa concludes, the yantra that stood in the fire is rolled and locked inside its silver amulet according to Agama vidhi — the practice by which the energies raised in a ritual are held within a consecrated object rather than dispersing. It is why a homa performed at our ashram can still reach a devotee ten thousand miles away: what the fire raised travels to you, sealed.

Personal sankalpa

Your name, gotra & nakshatra — for you and up to five family members.

Live telecast

Watch your own homa in real time from the ashram. Streamed openly on our YouTube channel by default — or request a private, unlisted telecast at checkout.

Free energised Yamaraja Yantra, sealed in a silver amulet

Consecrated over three days — Jala (holy-water consecration with mantras), Prana (life force through pranayama & chants) and Jeeva Pratishta (awakened with 108 recitations & offerings) — then present through your homa, receiving the energies raised in the fire. Immediately afterwards it is rolled and sealed inside a silver amulet by Agamic rite, locking those energies within, and shipped to you with your prasadam.

Prasadam, shipped free

Sacred vibhuti, sandalwood powder & kumkum from your fire — delivered to any country.

48-Day Anushthan (optional)

Daily temple worship for 48 days — the 27 Nakshatras + 12 Rashis + 9 Planets — then sealed in a silver amulet of approximately 2–4 inches.

A note on sacred tradition

As per strict Agama vidhi, no videography is permitted inside the temple sanctum — this preserves the pure sacred energies and undisturbed divine focus of the ritual. The main homa is respectfully telecast live from outside the sanctum; the daily rituals of the 48-day Anushthan are performed with full devotion but are not telecast.

Homas are telecast openly on our YouTube channel so that devotees everywhere may witness the rituals — and because we believe you should be able to see our work before you trust us with yours. Your sankalpa names you and your family, so if you would rather your ceremony were not public, choose the private telecast option at checkout and it is streamed as an unlisted link visible only to you.

We state this plainly — transparency about what tradition forbids filming, and about what is public, is part of performing these rituals honestly.

Who is invoked

Yamaraja — the goddess of knowledge itself

Yamaraja is one of the Tridevi and the mother of the Vedas — the presiding deity of knowledge, learning, memory, speech, music and every art. She is depicted in white upon a white lotus, holding the veena, a book, a rosary and a water pot, with the swan of discernment beside her.

In this homa, her grace — Yamaraja Kataksham — is invoked through fire with your own name and birth details spoken in the sankalpa.

Questions

Frequently asked

Thila homam — the sesame offering made for ancestors and for relief from affliction — is traditionally performed at a consecrated fire by a priest who has the authority to kindle and conclude it. It can be done at home only where the vidhi is correctly observed, the agni properly established and dissolved, and the offerings ritually pure. Most families today prefer it done at a Yagna Ashram on their behalf. That is how AstroBhava works: our priests perform the fire ritual here in your name and gotra, and you watch the whole of it on live telecast.a
Karuka homam is a fire ritual using karuka, the durva or bermuda grass sacred in South Indian and Kerala practice. The grass is offered into the fire with mantras and is associated with vitality, freedom from obstacles and the well-being of children. It is a separate rite from the Yamaraja Homa, though families concerned with health sometimes have both prescribed.
The Yamaraja Homa is a Vedic fire ritual invoking Yamaraja, the son of Surya, lord of dharma and keeper of the span allotted to each life. Its significance lies in appealing to the very authority who measures time — asking that the years given be lived in health and right conduct. It is classed as a Health homa and is turned to during illness, convalescence and old age.
The yamaraja homam benefits the tradition names are recovery from illness, renewed vitality, longevity, relief from chronic and long-standing ailments, release from fear around health and mortality, and dharmic protection of the household. The rite is performed as an offering and a prayer; it is not a substitute for medical care, and no outcome is promised.
Anyone in a period of illness or recovery, families caring for an elderly member, those living with a long-standing ailment, and devotees whose chart shows affliction to the sixth or eighth house or to the ayush karaka may have this homa prescribed. You may also book it in another person's name — their name, star and gotra are enough. The homa itself is performed by qualified priests at our Yagna Ashram; devotees do not attend.
Bharani nakshatra, whose lord is Yama, is the most direct window. Yama Dwitiya, Naraka Chaturdashi, Krishna Paksha Trayodashi and Amavasya are also favoured, as are Tuesdays and Saturdays. Our priests choose the muhurat after reading your birth star and the day's panchanga, and tell you the date and hour before the homa is performed.
The priests begin with sankalpa in your name, star and gotra, followed by Ganapati puja and punyahavachana. The kunda is prepared and agni kindled with the prescribed samidha. Yamaraja is invoked with his Gayatri and the Yama sukta, and offerings of ghee, black and white sesame, darbha and karuka grass, ayush herbs, grains and dry fruits are made into the fire. Purnahuti closes the offering, followed by the ayush prayer, deeparadhana and the giving of prasadam. You watch it live; the prasadam and an energised yantra are then couriered to you, wherever you are, free of shipping cost.
Book online from any country on this page. Give the name, birth star and gotra of the person the homa is for, and any sankalpa you wish read. Our team confirms the muhurat and sends you the live telecast link ahead of time. After the yamaraja homa concludes, prasadam and the energised yantra are couriered to your address worldwide.
