The Ritual and Its Weight

Netra means eye. Shakti is power. The Netra Shakti Shanti Homa is the fire rite that tends the light of the body — the seeing eye, and the inner warmth that keeps a person well. In the Vedic view, Surya rules the eyes and presides over ojas, the vital sap that carries recovery, appetite, sleep and stamina. When that light dims — through long illness, strain, age or a run of ailments that will not lift — the tradition prescribes fire, not silence. Ghee is offered at sunrise. Surya is invited into the flame. The devotee's name and nakshatra are spoken into it.

Shanti here does not mean quiet. It means the settling of a disturbance. Chronic conditions unsettle more than the body; they unsettle the household's mind. This homa is done to steady that whole field — to place the ailing one under the sun's regard, to soften the karmic weight the shastras associate with prolonged suffering, and to ask for length of days lived in strength. Our priests perform the netra shakti shanti homam on your behalf at the Yagna Ashram in Coimbatore, so that you or the one you are praying for may rest while the fire works.

ॐ घृणिः सूर्याय नमः Salutations to Surya, the compassionate blaze whose warmth sustains sight, strength and the span of life.

Why Devotees Book This

Families come to the Netra Shakti Shanti Homa when the body has been struggling for a long time and they want the tradition's oldest recourse — fire, offered by trained hands, in someone's name.

Support Through Recovery

Offered when someone is convalescing after illness, surgery or a long hospital stay, so the return to strength is placed in Surya's care.

For the Eyes and the Light of Sight

The rite is traditionally prescribed for those straining their vision, facing eye trouble, or simply wishing to guard clear sight into old age.

Relief Sought for Chronic Ailments

When a condition has become a long companion, the homa is performed to ask for shanti — the settling of what will not settle on its own.

Vitality and Ojas

Ghee and dravya are offered to kindle the inner fire the texts call ojas: appetite, sleep, stamina, the will to get out of bed.

Ayush — Length of Days

Elders in the family are named in the sankalpa so that the years ahead are asked for in strength, not merely in number.

Steadiness for the Household

Long illness tires the caregivers too. The homa gathers the whole family into one prayer and gives them something to hold.

What a Maha Homa is

Not every fire ritual is performed at the same scale. A Maha Homa is our largest form — more priests, a longer fire, and the complete chanting sequence the rite prescribes rather than an abridged one. This is what that means in practice.

Priests5 or 10Chanting in unison, never in rotation
The fire burnsApprox. 2 hoursFrom the sankalpa to the final aarti

TelecastEvery minuteNothing is performed off camera

A Maha Homa is performed for one devotee and their named family, the same as any homa we conduct. What the scale changes is the weight of the offering — ten trained voices holding one hymn for two hours is a different undertaking from one voice for an hour, and it is reserved for the intentions that warrant it.

Sacred Timing

Surya rites are set to the sun. Our panchang team fixes the muhurat for your netra shakti shanti homa and tells you the exact hour before it begins.

Sunday, at Sunrise

Surya's own weekday. The fire is lit as the first light reaches the ashram, the most favoured window for this homa.

Ratha Saptami

The sun's turning day in Magha month, held in the tradition as the single most potent occasion for rites of health and vision.

Hasta Nakshatra

Presided over by Savitr, the impelling face of the sun. Chosen for offerings that ask for restored strength.

Makara Sankranti and Shukla Paksha Days

As the sun turns north and the moon waxes, the tradition reads the period as favourable for beginning a course of healing prayer.

What you receive

The sealing of the yantra

When your homa concludes, the yantra that stood in the fire is rolled and locked inside its silver amulet according to Agama vidhi — the practice by which the energies raised in a ritual are held within a consecrated object rather than dispersing. It is why a homa performed at our ashram can still reach a devotee ten thousand miles away: what the fire raised travels to you, sealed.

Personal sankalpa

Your name, gotra & nakshatra — for you and up to five family members.

Live telecast

Watch your own homa in real time from the ashram. Streamed openly on our YouTube channel by default — or request a private, unlisted telecast at checkout.

Free energised Surya Yantra, sealed in a silver amulet

Consecrated over three days — Jala (holy-water consecration with mantras), Prana (life force through pranayama & chants) and Jeeva Pratishta (awakened with 108 recitations & offerings) — then present through your homa, receiving the energies raised in the fire. Immediately afterwards it is rolled and sealed inside a silver amulet by Agamic rite, locking those energies within, and shipped to you with your prasadam.

Prasadam, shipped free

Sacred vibhuti, sandalwood powder & kumkum from your fire — delivered to any country.

48-Day Anushthan (optional)

Daily temple worship for 48 days — the 27 Nakshatras + 12 Rashis + 9 Planets — then sealed in a silver amulet of approximately 2–4 inches.

A note on sacred tradition

As per strict Agama vidhi, no videography is permitted inside the temple sanctum — this preserves the pure sacred energies and undisturbed divine focus of the ritual. The main homa is respectfully telecast live from outside the sanctum; the daily rituals of the 48-day Anushthan are performed with full devotion but are not telecast.

Homas are telecast openly on our YouTube channel so that devotees everywhere may witness the rituals — and because we believe you should be able to see our work before you trust us with yours. Your sankalpa names you and your family, so if you would rather your ceremony were not public, choose the private telecast option at checkout and it is streamed as an unlisted link visible only to you.

We state this plainly — transparency about what tradition forbids filming, and about what is public, is part of performing these rituals honestly.

Who is invoked

Surya — the goddess of knowledge itself

Surya is one of the Tridevi and the mother of the Vedas — the presiding deity of knowledge, learning, memory, speech, music and every art. She is depicted in white upon a white lotus, holding the veena, a book, a rosary and a water pot, with the swan of discernment beside her.

In this homa, her grace — Surya Kataksham — is invoked through fire with your own name and birth details spoken in the sankalpa.

Questions

Frequently asked

It is a Vedic fire ritual invoking Surya, who in the shastras rules the eyes and the vital heat of the body. Netra shakti is the power of sight and inner light; shanti is the settling of what has been disturbed. The homa is performed for those recovering from illness, living with a long-standing ailment, guarding their vision, or praying for a long life lived in strength. Ghee, herbs and grains are offered into a consecrated fire while the devotee's name, gotra and nakshatra are spoken in the sankalpa.
The tradition prescribes this homa for support during recovery, for care of the eyes and clarity of sight, for relief sought from chronic conditions, for ojas and everyday vitality, and for ayush — length of days. It is also taken up by families as a collective prayer when one member has been unwell for a long time. The rite is an offering, not a treatment; devotees continue their medical care alongside it.
Anyone recovering from illness, living with a long-standing ailment, working under heavy visual strain, or caring for an ageing parent may book it. It is often sponsored on behalf of someone else — a child, a spouse, a parent — and their name is used in the sankalpa. Those with an afflicted Sun in the birth chart, or running a Surya dasha, are frequently advised this homa. You need no prior initiation or ritual experience. Our priests perform the netra shakti shanti homam for you at our Yagna Ashram; you attend through the live telecast.
Sunrise on a Sunday is the classic window. Ratha Saptami is the most powerful single day of the year for it. Hasta nakshatra, Makara Sankranti and the waxing-moon fortnight are also favoured. If someone is unwell now, do not wait for a distant date — our panchang team will find the nearest clean muhurat and confirm the hour with you.
The priests begin with achamana, Ganapati puja and punyahavachanam to purify the space, then take the sankalpa in your name, gotra and nakshatra. The kalasha is established and Surya is invoked. Agni is kindled in the prescribed kunda. Offerings follow the japa of the Surya mantras — cow ghee, samidha of arka and palasha, akshata, honey, red flowers, durva, navadhanya and health-related dravya. The rite closes with purnahuti, the full oblation, then deeparadhana, mangala arati and the blessing of prasadam. Everything is carried out as a Maha homa. You do not arrange any samagri; the ashram provides all of it.
Book online from any country. Give the name, gotra and birth star of the person the homa is for, along with your intention. We confirm the muhurat and send you the live telecast link so you can watch the fire from wherever you are. Afterwards, the prasadam and an energised yantra from the ritual are couriered to your address worldwide, free of shipping cost.
