The Ritual and Its Weight
Naga Dosha is the mark the serpent deities leave on a horoscope. As a Maha homa it runs with the full sankalpa, the full count of ahutis and the Rahu-Ketu propitiation that a serpent rite requires. Devotees come to this naga dosha pooja when marriage keeps slipping, when a child is prayed for, when skin and nerve troubles recur, or when the astrologer simply says the word sarpa and the chart goes quiet.
अनन्तं वासुकिं शेषं पद्मनाभं च कम्बलम् । शङ्खपालं धृतराष्ट्रं तक्षकं कालियं तथा ॥ एतानि नव नामानि नागानां च महात्मनाम् । Ananta, Vasuki, Shesha, Padmanabha, Kambala, Shankhapala, Dhritarashtra, Takshaka and Kaliya — these are the nine names of the great-souled serpent lords, and whoever recites them with reverence is freed from the fear of serpents.
