The Ritual and Its Weight

The Hayagreeva Homa is a fire offering made to Hayagreeva, the horse-necked form of Vishnu who recovered the stolen Vedas and returned speech and scripture to the world. Ghee, white sesame, payasam and havis are given to Agni while the priests chant the Hayagreeva mantra and the Vedic suktas of learning. Tradition places this rite at the head of every scholarly undertaking — the beginning of study, the eve of an examination, the start of a research year, the day a child is first taught to write.

Among the many types of homam, this one is prescribed specifically for the mind. Where other rites address the household or the planets, the Hayagreeva Homa addresses vidya: the ability to grasp, hold and speak what you have learned. Devotees book it when concentration scatters, when memory feels slippery under pressure, or when a result matters enough to be placed before the fire. The homa benefits sought here are steadiness of attention and clarity of expression — the conditions in which effort can do its work.

ज्ञानानन्दमयं देवं निर्मलस्फटिकाकृतिम्। आधारं सर्वविद्यानां हयग्रीवमुपास्महे॥ We worship Hayagreeva, the deity who is pure knowledge and bliss, formed like flawless crystal, the foundation and support of all learning.

Why Devotees Book This

The hayagreeva homam benefits named in tradition all circle one point — a mind that stays where you place it.

Sharper concentration

Sought by students whose attention wanders during long study hours and needs to settle.

Retentive memory

The rite is traditionally offered so that what is read is held, and what is held can be recalled.

Steadiness before exams

Booked in the weeks before board exams, entrance tests, competitive papers and vivas.

Clarity of speech

Hayagreeva presides over vak. Devotees offer this before interviews, presentations and oral defences.

Support for research and higher study

Scholars, doctoral candidates and teachers offer it at the start of a difficult project or academic year.

A child's beginning in learning

Offered around Vidyarambham, first schooling and the start of a new class, as a blessing on the years of study ahead.

What you receive

The sealing of the yantra

When your homa concludes, the yantra that stood in the fire is rolled and locked inside its silver amulet according to Agama vidhi — the practice by which the energies raised in a ritual are held within a consecrated object rather than dispersing. It is why a homa performed at our ashram can still reach a devotee ten thousand miles away: what the fire raised travels to you, sealed.

Personal sankalpa

Your name, gotra & nakshatra — for you and up to five family members.

Live telecast

Watch your own homa in real time from the ashram. Streamed openly on our YouTube channel by default — or request a private, unlisted telecast at checkout.

Free energised Hayagreeva Yantra, sealed in a silver amulet

Consecrated over three days — Jala (holy-water consecration with mantras), Prana (life force through pranayama & chants) and Jeeva Pratishta (awakened with 108 recitations & offerings) — then present through your homa, receiving the energies raised in the fire. Immediately afterwards it is rolled and sealed inside a silver amulet by Agamic rite, locking those energies within, and shipped to you with your prasadam.

Prasadam, shipped free

Sacred vibhuti, sandalwood powder & kumkum from your fire — delivered to any country.

48-Day Anushthan (optional)

Daily temple worship for 48 days — the 27 Nakshatras + 12 Rashis + 9 Planets — then sealed in a silver amulet of approximately 2–4 inches.

A note on sacred tradition

As per strict Agama vidhi, no videography is permitted inside the temple sanctum — this preserves the pure sacred energies and undisturbed divine focus of the ritual. The main homa is respectfully telecast live from outside the sanctum; the daily rituals of the 48-day Anushthan are performed with full devotion but are not telecast.

Homas are telecast openly on our YouTube channel so that devotees everywhere may witness the rituals — and because we believe you should be able to see our work before you trust us with yours. Your sankalpa names you and your family, so if you would rather your ceremony were not public, choose the private telecast option at checkout and it is streamed as an unlisted link visible only to you.

We state this plainly — transparency about what tradition forbids filming, and about what is public, is part of performing these rituals honestly.

Who is invoked

Hayagreeva — the goddess of knowledge itself

Hayagreeva is one of the Tridevi and the mother of the Vedas — the presiding deity of knowledge, learning, memory, speech, music and every art. She is depicted in white upon a white lotus, holding the veena, a book, a rosary and a water pot, with the swan of discernment beside her.

In this homa, her grace — Hayagreeva Kataksham — is invoked through fire with your own name and birth details spoken in the sankalpa.

Questions

Frequently asked

Thila homam is a rite for the ancestors and is traditionally performed by a qualified priest at a sacred riverbank or a consecrated homa kunda, with strict rules of purity and timing. Many families are not able to keep those conditions at home. That is why AstroBhava has it performed by trained priests at our Yagna Ashram on your behalf, streamed live to you wherever you are. Note that the rite on this page is the Hayagreeva Homa, which is for learning, not thila homam.
Hayagreeva homam is a Vedic fire ritual offered to Hayagreeva, the horse-faced form of Vishnu who is the source of all knowledge. Ghee, sesame, payasam and other havis are offered into the consecrated fire while the Hayagreeva mantra and suktas of vidya are chanted. It is performed for students, scholars and anyone whose work depends on focus, memory and clear speech.
For marriage, tradition points to rites such as the Swayamvara Parvathi Homa and the Uma Maheswara Homa, which are offered for a suitable alliance and marital harmony. The Hayagreeva Homa is not a marriage rite — it belongs to the education category and is offered for learning, memory and examinations.
For a home, families usually choose Ganapathi Homa before entering a new house, Vastu Homa for the dwelling itself, or Lakshmi Kubera Homa for household prosperity. The Hayagreeva Homa is offered for a person's studies rather than for a property, though many families book it for a child studying at home.
There is no single best homa. Among the many types of homam, each is prescribed for a purpose, and the right one is the one that matches your need and your chart. If your concern is study, concentration, memory or an examination ahead, the Hayagreeva Homa is the rite the tradition names for it. If you are unsure, our team can read your birth details and guide you.
Hayagreeva is the form of Vishnu with a human body and the head of a horse, white as crystal, holding the conch, discus, a book and the gesture of teaching. The Puranas tell how the Vedas were carried off by the asuras Madhu and Kaitabha, and how Hayagreeva recovered them and restored sacred speech to the world. He is therefore worshipped as the lord and support of all knowledge — jnanananda, the bliss that is knowing.
It is a fire offering to Hayagreeva, made so that learning may take root and stay. Its significance lies in what Hayagreeva restored: the Vedas, and with them the power of memory and speech. Offering into the fire before an examination or at the beginning of study is the tradition's way of placing your effort under the protection of knowledge itself.
The benefits sought are sharper concentration, better retention of what is studied, composure during examinations, clarity in speaking and writing, and steady progress in research or higher study. It is also offered as a blessing at Vidyarambham, when a child begins formal learning. The homa is a prayer, offered with devotion, not a promise of a particular result.
The homa itself should be performed by priests trained in the Hayagreeva mantra and the Vedic procedure. It is booked by students preparing for board exams, entrance tests and competitive papers, by research scholars and teachers, by professionals facing interviews or certifications, and by parents on behalf of a child. You do not need to attend or to know the chants — the sankalpa is made in your name.
Shravana nakshatra is the most favoured star for this homa, and Hayagreeva Jayanti on Shravana Purnima is the year's most sought-after date. Vijayadashami and Vidyarambham day are traditional for beginning study. Thursdays and Panchami tithi also suit rites for wisdom. Many devotees simply choose the days just before an examination, and our priests fix the muhurat accordingly.
The priests begin with achamana, purification of the space and a sankalpa taken in your name, gotra and nakshatra. Ganapathi puja and punyahavachanam follow. Agni is invoked in the kunda and Hayagreeva is installed and worshipped with shodashopachara. Offerings of ghee, white sesame, akshata, payasam, honey, milk, coconut, banana, navadhanya and sacred samidha are made with the Hayagreeva mantra and the suktas of learning. The rite closes with purnahuti, deeparadhana and mangala arati, after which prasadam and an energised yantra are couriered to you.
Choose your package on this page and enter the name, gotra and birth star of the person the homa is for. Our team confirms the muhurat and sends you the live-stream link. Qualified priests perform the homa at our Yagna Ashram in Coimbatore on your behalf, and you watch it live from any country. Prasadam and the energised yantra are couriered to your address at no extra charge. Details of the hayagreeva homam cost for your country appear with the packages above.
