The Avahanthi Homa takes its name from the word that opens its central verse - avahanti, she who brings, she who carries towards. The mantras come from the fourth anuvaka of the Shikshavalli in the Taittiriya Upanishad, a passage recited for generations by students beginning their study. Each line ends in svaha, which means it was never meant only for recitation. It was meant for fire. That is what this homa restores.

A note on sacred tradition
As per strict Agama vidhi, no videography is permitted inside the temple sanctum — this preserves the pure sacred energies and undisturbed divine focus of the ritual. The main homa is respectfully telecast live from outside the sanctum; the daily rituals of the 48-day Anushthan are performed with full devotion but are not telecast.
Homas are telecast openly on our YouTube channel so that devotees everywhere may witness the rituals — and because we believe you should be able to see our work before you trust us with yours. The energised yantra is carefully rolled and sealed inside a sacred silver amulet before shipping. Wearing it is itself a small ritual — and even its timing is set for you personally.

Sankalpa
The priest states your name, gotra and nakshatra — and those of up to five family members — with the intention this homa is performed for.

Ganapati Puja
The customary invocation to Ganapati, clearing obstacles before the goddess is approached.

Agni Pratishtha
The fire is consecrated in the homa kunda and Agni invoked as the carrier of every offering that follows.

Medha Devi Avahana
The Medha Devi Sukta and Medha Devi Gayatri are chanted, inviting the goddess's presence into the fire — by one, three or five priests as your package sets.

Ahuti
Ghee, white flowers, akshata and honey are offered in sequence with mantra — the offerings traditional to her worship.

Purnahuti
The final complete offering seals the sankalpa stated at the opening.

Medha Devi — the goddess of knowledge itself
Medha Devi is one of the Tridevi and the mother of the Vedas — the presiding deity of knowledge, learning, memory, speech, music and every art. She is depicted in white upon a white lotus, holding the veena, a book, a rosary and a water pot, with the swan of discernment beside her.
In this homa, her grace — Medha Devi Kataksham — is invoked through fire with your own name and birth details spoken in the sankalpa.

Avahanthi Homam is a Vedic fire ritual built on the avahanti verses of the Taittiriya Upanishad - the passage a student traditionally recites when beginning study. The verses invoke Medha Devi, the goddess of retentive intelligence, and each ends in svaha, the word of offering. Priests recite them while making oblations into the consecrated fire on behalf of the student.
You do not light the fire yourself - our priests do that at the Yagna Ashram. On your side, keep it simple and clean. Bathe before the telecast, sit facing the screen at your puja place, light a lamp, and stay seated for the duration if you can. When the prasadam and the energised yantra reach you by courier, place the yantra in your puja space or at the student's study table, and share the prasadam within the family. Vibhuti or kumkum from the homa is applied to the forehead, not stored loosely.
