The Ritual and Its Weight

The Chandrasekhara Ashtakam is Markandeya's hymn. The tradition tells it plainly: a child whose span was measured in years clung to the Shivalinga and sang eight verses to the Lord who wears the crescent moon. Fear left him. In the Chandrasekhara Ashtakam Homa, those same verses are not merely recited — they are offered, syllable by syllable, into a consecrated fire kindled in your name and gotra.

This is a Maha-tier rite, and it is placed in the Health category for a reason. Devotees turn to the chandrasekhara ashtakam homam when a body has been worn thin by long illness, when recovery is slow, when the household wants Shiva's shelter over an ageing parent or a convalescing child. Agni carries each ahuti; the hymn's refrain — pahi mam, raksha mam — becomes the shape of the whole morning.

चन्द्रशेखर चन्द्रशेखर चन्द्रशेखर पाहि माम् । चन्द्रशेखर चन्द्रशेखर चन्द्रशेखर रक्ष माम् ॥ O Shiva who wears the crescent moon upon your head, protect me; O Chandrasekhara, shelter and preserve me.

Why Devotees Book This

Shiva as Chandrasekhara is the stillness that fear cannot enter. Devotees bring these prayers to the fire:

Support through recovery

Offered when someone is convalescing after illness, surgery or a long treatment, asking Shiva's grace over the slow work of getting well.

Relief sought from chronic complaints

Families who have lived with a recurring, wearying condition bring it to this fire and place it in the Lord's hands.

Vitality and ojas

The tradition invokes Chandrasekhara for the cool, steady strength the crescent moon signifies — energy that does not burn itself out.

Ayush and longevity

Markandeya's hymn is the classical prayer for a long span. Households offer it for elders, for parents, and on birth-star days.

Freedom from fear

Illness frightens the mind before it tires the body. The refrain raksha mam is chanted for courage and an unshaken heart.

Protective shelter for the household

The homa is also taken up for the whole family's wellbeing, that the year pass without upheaval under Shiva's watch.

What a Maha Homa is

Not every fire ritual is performed at the same scale. A Maha Homa is our largest form. This is what that means.

Performed at full scale

More priests, and a fire that burns for as long as the rite itself requires rather than a shortened sitting. The exact figures for this rite are stated with its price above.

Chanted complete

The whole sequence the rite calls for, in unison, never a representative portion of it and never chanted in rotation.

Telecast entire

Every minute, from the sankalpa in which your name is spoken to the final aarti. Nothing is performed off camera.

A Maha Homa is performed for one devotee and their named family, exactly like any homa we conduct. What the scale changes is the weight of the offering, and it is reserved for the intentions that warrant it.

One rite, one price

There is nothing to choose. Unlike most of our homas, the Chandrasekhara Ashtakam Homa is not offered at several priest counts. It is performed one way, as the rite requires — 5 priests, 5 hours — with the free energised Vishnu Yantra sealed in its silver amulet, the live telecast, and free worldwide delivery of your prasadam all included in the one price.

Sacred Timing

Any day sanctified to Shiva suits this homa. These are the occasions our priests favour:

Pradosham

The twilight hour of Trayodashi, when Shiva is said to dance between the worlds. The most sought-after slot for the Chandrasekhara Ashtakam Homa.

Somavara — Mondays

Monday belongs to the moon, and the moon rests on Shiva's brow. A natural day for prayers of healing and cooling strength.

Maha Shivaratri

The great night of Shiva, when the hymn is offered for longevity and for deep, sustained devotion.

Ardra or your birth nakshatra

Ardra is Rudra's own star; many devotees also choose the janma nakshatra of the person the homa is offered for.

What you receive

The sealing of the yantra

When your homa concludes, the yantra that stood in the fire is rolled and locked inside its silver amulet according to Agama vidhi — the practice by which the energies raised in a ritual are held within a consecrated object rather than dispersing. It is why a homa performed at our ashram can still reach a devotee ten thousand miles away: what the fire raised travels to you, sealed.

Personal sankalpa

Your name, gotra & nakshatra — for you and up to five family members.

Live telecast

Watch your own homa in real time from the ashram. Streamed openly on our YouTube channel by default — or request a private, unlisted telecast at checkout.

Free energised Chandrasekhara Yantra, sealed in a silver amulet

Consecrated over three days — Jala (holy-water consecration with mantras), Prana (life force through pranayama & chants) and Jeeva Pratishta (awakened with 108 recitations & offerings) — then present through your homa, receiving the energies raised in the fire. Immediately afterwards it is rolled and sealed inside a silver amulet by Agamic rite, locking those energies within, and shipped to you with your prasadam.

Prasadam, shipped free

Sacred vibhuti, sandalwood powder & kumkum from your fire — delivered to any country.

48-Day Anushthan (optional)

Daily temple worship for 48 days — the 27 Nakshatras + 12 Rashis + 9 Planets — then sealed in a silver amulet of approximately 2–4 inches.

A note on sacred tradition

As per strict Agama vidhi, no videography is permitted inside the temple sanctum — this preserves the pure sacred energies and undisturbed divine focus of the ritual. The main homa is respectfully telecast live from outside the sanctum; the daily rituals of the 48-day Anushthan are performed with full devotion but are not telecast.

Homas are telecast openly on our YouTube channel so that devotees everywhere may witness the rituals — and because we believe you should be able to see our work before you trust us with yours. Your sankalpa names you and your family, so if you would rather your ceremony were not public, choose the private telecast option at checkout and it is streamed as an unlisted link visible only to you.

We state this plainly — transparency about what tradition forbids filming, and about what is public, is part of performing these rituals honestly.

Who is invoked

Chandrasekhara — the goddess of knowledge itself

Chandrasekhara is one of the Tridevi and the mother of the Vedas — the presiding deity of knowledge, learning, memory, speech, music and every art. She is depicted in white upon a white lotus, holding the veena, a book, a rosary and a water pot, with the swan of discernment beside her.

In this homa, her grace — Chandrasekhara Kataksham — is invoked through fire with your own name and birth details spoken in the sankalpa.

Questions

Frequently asked

It is a fire ritual built around the Chandrasekhara Ashtakam, the eight-verse hymn the sage Markandeya sang to Lord Shiva, the one who bears the crescent moon in his matted hair. Each verse ends in the plea pahi mam, raksha mam — protect me, preserve me. In the homa, the hymn is chanted and offered into consecrated fire with ghee, bilva and herbs. Because the hymn is remembered as Markandeya's prayer for life itself, the rite has always been held as a prayer for health, ayush and Shiva's protection.
Devotees take it up during recovery from illness, for relief from long-standing and recurring ailments, for physical vitality and ojas, for longevity in elders, and for freedom from the fear that illness brings. Many also offer it simply for the household's wellbeing through the year. The tradition prescribes the rite for these purposes; the fruit rests with Lord Shiva and with your own faith and care.
Anyone may sponsor it. It is most often booked by someone recovering from a long illness or surgery, by children on behalf of ageing parents, by families living with a chronic condition, and by devotees who keep Shiva as their ishta and want the hymn offered on their birth star each year. There is no bar of age, gotra or country — you may sponsor it for yourself or name another person as the yajamana.
Pradosham twilight is the classic choice, followed by Mondays, Maha Shivaratri and Ardra nakshatra. The birth nakshatra of the person for whom it is offered is also excellent. If none of these fall soon and the need is immediate, our priests will fix a clean muhurat from the current panchanga rather than have you wait.
The priests begin with achamana, sankalpa in your name, gotra and nakshatra, and Ganapati puja to clear obstacles. Kalasha sthapana and punyahavachana follow. The homa kunda is consecrated and Agni invoked. A Shivalinga is worshipped with abhishekam and bilva patra. The eight verses of the Chandrasekhara Ashtakam are then chanted in sequence with ahutis of cow ghee, bilva leaves, samidha of palasha and audumbara, herbs, honey, sesame, rice and dry fruits. Rudram and Shiva mula mantra japa accompany the offerings. The rite closes with purnahuti, deeparadhana, prarthana for arogya and ayush, and distribution of vibhuti.
Book online from any country. Choose your package on this page and send us the name, gotra, birth star and, if you wish, the specific health prayer of the person the homa is for. Our priests perform the chandrasekhara ashtakam homam at AstroBhava's Yagna Ashram in Coimbatore on your behalf and telecast it live, so you can sit with the fire from wherever you are. Prasadam, vibhuti and an energised yantra are couriered to your address worldwide, free of shipping cost. You need not travel or attend in person.
