How the syllable is fixed

Every nakshatra divides into four padas of 3°20′ each, and each pada carries a syllable. The Moon’s exact position at birth decides which of the four applies — so two children born under the same star on the same day can be assigned different syllables.

This is why the birth time matters here more than for most purposes. The Moon crosses a nakshatra in about a day but a pada in roughly six hours. A birth recorded to the nearest hour is usually enough; a time remembered rather than documented may not be.

The syllables themselves are traditional and phonetic rather than strictly Sanskrit — Chu, Che, Cho, La for Ashwini, and so on through the twenty-seven. Regional practice varies slightly in transliteration, which is why you may see Choo where we give Chu, or Thi where we give Tee. These are the same sound written differently.

The Namakarana

Namakarana is the naming samskara, one of the sixteen rites marking a Hindu life. It is traditionally performed on the eleventh or twelfth day after birth, though practice varies — some families keep the sixteenth day, some the first new moon, and in parts of the south it is done in the third month.

The rite itself is brief. The child is bathed and dressed, the family deity and the ancestors are invoked, and the name is spoken into the child’s right ear by the father or the officiating priest — traditionally three times. Sweets are distributed and the name is then used.

Four names, in the classical scheme

• Nakshatra name — from the syllable of the birth star and pada. Often used only in rituals thereafter, and not as the everyday name.
• Masa name — from the deity of the lunar month of birth. Rarely used now.
• Deity name — the family or chosen deity, given in devotion.
• Vyavaharika name — the worldly name, used in daily life. This is the one most families now choose freely.

In practice most families today give a nakshatra name for ritual use alongside an everyday name chosen for other reasons — and both are entirely traditional. The classical scheme expected exactly this.

The syllable is a starting point, not a constraint

Where the traditional syllable produces nothing the family likes, the classical position is more relaxed than it is often presented. The vyavaharika name — the one used in daily life — was always chosen freely. Many families give a nakshatra name for ritual use and an everyday name they simply prefer, and this is not a compromise but the scheme working as intended.

The meaning matters as much as the sound

Sanskrit names carry meanings that persist, and a name is spoken over a person for a lifetime. It is worth knowing what one means before choosing it — a few names in common circulation have meanings their popularity has obscured. Where a name is chosen for its sound, check the meaning separately.

Names taken from deities carry an obligation

Traditionally, naming a child after a deity implied that the family would keep that deity’s observances — the weekday, the fast, the annual rite. This is lightly held now, but it is the reason such names were once given with more deliberation than they sometimes are.

Consider how it will be used

A name is shortened, called across a room, written on forms and spoken by people unfamiliar with the language. This is not a traditional consideration and it is a real one. The most-loved names tend to survive all of that intact.
