The Ritual and Its Weight

The Dattatreya Homa is a fire ritual offered to Lord Dattatreya, the Adi Guru — the first teacher, in whom the three great powers of creation, sustenance and dissolution stand in a single form. Where other homas ask for a specific fruit, this one asks for guidance. The seeker who has read much and understood little, who sits for sadhana and finds the mind wandering, who senses a door but cannot find the handle, turns to Datta. Tradition holds that he comes quietly, often unrecognised, and that the fire is one of the oldest ways of calling him.

Ghee meets flame while the Datta mantra is chanted in measured rounds, and the offerings are made in your name and gotra. The Dattatreya pooja is prescribed for those walking a devotional path — to steady the practice, to soften the ego that resists a teacher, and to clear the stale obstructions that gather across a life. You watch the whole rite by live telecast from our Yagna Ashram in Coimbatore. The prasadam and an energised yantra reach you afterwards, wherever in the world you are.

ॐ द्रां दत्तात्रेयाय नमः Salutations to Lord Dattatreya, the eternal Guru — may his grace awaken and guide me.

Why Devotees Book This

Among the Dattatreya homa benefits the tradition names, these are the ones devotees most often come asking for.

Guru's Grace

Datta is the Adi Guru. The homa is performed by those praying to be led — to a living teacher, or to clarity in the practice they already hold.

Steadier Sadhana

For japa that keeps slipping and meditation that will not settle, the rite is offered to bring regularity and depth to daily practice.

Inner Peace

The Datta mantra is chanted for quietening of the restless mind and for the calm that lets devotion take root.

Softening of Ego

Datta learned from twenty-four teachers in the natural world. His homa is offered for humility — the willingness to receive instruction from anywhere.

Clearing of Obstructions

Dattatreya pooja benefits are traditionally invoked when the same difficulty keeps returning and no ordinary remedy seems to touch it.

Refuge and Protection

Devotees offer this homa when walking through fear, confusion or a dark season, seeking Datta's presence as shelter.

Sacred Timing

The Dattatreya homam is timed to the days the tradition holds closest to the Adi Guru.

Datta Jayanti

The full moon of Margashirsha, the day of Dattatreya's advent. The most revered occasion of the year for this homa.

Thursday (Guruvara)

The guru's own weekday. Devotees who cannot wait for a festival most often choose a Thursday.

Purnima

Every full moon carries Datta's association. Purnima is favoured for Dattatreya puja and for beginning a sustained sadhana.

Punarvasu and Anuradha Nakshatra

Stars linked with return, refuge and steady devotion — well suited to a rite of surrender to the guru.

What you receive

The sealing of the yantra

When your homa concludes, the yantra that stood in the fire is rolled and locked inside its silver amulet according to Agama vidhi — the practice by which the energies raised in a ritual are held within a consecrated object rather than dispersing. It is why a homa performed at our ashram can still reach a devotee ten thousand miles away: what the fire raised travels to you, sealed.

Personal sankalpa

Your name, gotra & nakshatra — for you and up to five family members.

Live telecast

Watch your own homa in real time from the ashram. Streamed openly on our YouTube channel by default — or request a private, unlisted telecast at checkout.

Free energised Dattatreya Yantra, sealed in a silver amulet

Consecrated over three days — Jala (holy-water consecration with mantras), Prana (life force through pranayama & chants) and Jeeva Pratishta (awakened with 108 recitations & offerings) — then present through your homa, receiving the energies raised in the fire. Immediately afterwards it is rolled and sealed inside a silver amulet by Agamic rite, locking those energies within, and shipped to you with your prasadam.

Prasadam, shipped free

Sacred vibhuti, sandalwood powder & kumkum from your fire — delivered to any country.

48-Day Anushthan (optional)

Daily temple worship for 48 days — the 27 Nakshatras + 12 Rashis + 9 Planets — then sealed in a silver amulet of approximately 2–4 inches.

A note on sacred tradition

As per strict Agama vidhi, no videography is permitted inside the temple sanctum — this preserves the pure sacred energies and undisturbed divine focus of the ritual. The main homa is respectfully telecast live from outside the sanctum; the daily rituals of the 48-day Anushthan are performed with full devotion but are not telecast.

Homas are telecast openly on our YouTube channel so that devotees everywhere may witness the rituals — and because we believe you should be able to see our work before you trust us with yours. Your sankalpa names you and your family, so if you would rather your ceremony were not public, choose the private telecast option at checkout and it is streamed as an unlisted link visible only to you.

We state this plainly — transparency about what tradition forbids filming, and about what is public, is part of performing these rituals honestly.

Who is invoked

Dattatreya — the goddess of knowledge itself

Dattatreya is one of the Tridevi and the mother of the Vedas — the presiding deity of knowledge, learning, memory, speech, music and every art. She is depicted in white upon a white lotus, holding the veena, a book, a rosary and a water pot, with the swan of discernment beside her.

In this homa, her grace — Dattatreya Kataksham — is invoked through fire with your own name and birth details spoken in the sankalpa.

Questions

Frequently asked

The Dattatreya Homa is a Vedic fire ritual offered to Lord Dattatreya, the Adi Guru, in whom Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are worshipped as one form. Its significance lies in what it asks for: not a material fruit, but guidance. Ghee, herbs and grains are offered into the consecrated fire while the Datta mantra is chanted, in the name and gotra of the devotee. The tradition treats it as a rite of surrender to the teaching principle itself.
The Dattatreya homa benefits named in tradition are guru's grace and guidance on the spiritual path, steadiness in daily sadhana, inner peace, the softening of ego that lets one learn, and relief from long-standing obstructions. Dattatreya pooja benefits are also invoked for refuge in times of fear or confusion. The homa is a prayer offered in the prescribed way; the fruit rests with the Lord.
Anyone drawn to the devotional path may have it performed — seekers praying for a guru, practitioners whose sadhana has grown dry, householders wanting a spiritual foundation for the family, and those facing recurring difficulty. Datta devotees observe it yearly. At AstroBhava, qualified priests perform it on your behalf at our Yagna Ashram; you need not attend, travel or fast.
Datta Jayanti, the Margashirsha full moon, is the most auspicious day. Thursdays, the guru's weekday, and every Purnima are traditionally favoured. Punarvasu and Anuradha nakshatras suit the rite well. If you have a birth chart concern or a particular intention, our priests will fix a muhurat for you when you book.
The priests begin with sankalpa in your name, nakshatra and gotra, followed by Ganapati puja and kalasha sthapana. The homa kunda is consecrated and Agni invoked. Dattatreya is installed and worshipped with shodashopachara, after which the Datta mantra is chanted in the prescribed count with ahutis of ghee, samidha, navadhanya, honey, sesame and fragrant herbs. Purnahuti, aarti and prayers for the devotee close the rite. Everything is streamed live to you.
Book online from any country. Choose the Dattatreya Homa, give your name, birth star and gotra, and share your intention.
